About Fibreglass Pool Shells

Fibreglass Pools

The backyard swimming pool is one of those quintessential CapeTowneons luxuries but how do you know which one is the right choice?  Fibreglass has been a popular material to build pools with for years now and for good reason.  If you don’t know a lot about fibreglass pool shells, we’ve put together this excellent information to get you started.  For anything else you want to know, or if you’d like to see some fibreglass pool shells for yourself, get in contact with your local pool builder.

About Fibreglass Pool Shells

A fibreglass pool shell can be most simply defined as a pool that is made all in one piece and that is directly installed in place either above ground or in ground.  The shell is made in a special mould at the factory (the fibreglass is poured into the mould and allowed to set) before it is delivered to site.  The size and shape of the fibreglass pool shell will depend on the mould used but you will find that several different sizes and shapes are available.  Modern pool shells are made to be self supporting so that they need little in the way of additional bracing but some pool shells may require bracing to ensure that they are fully supported.

Shapes Available in Fibreglass Pool Shells

As the shells are made off site in a factory, you have a standard range of shapes to choose from.  It is unlikely that you will be able to get a fibreglass pool shell custom made.  However, you don’t have to worry about being limited in your choices as fibreglass pool shells are designed to be used as above ground and in ground pools and can be full sized, lap pools, or plunge pools, depending on the size of your backyard.  Shape wise, some common shapes that you can expect to see include kidney, rectangular, oval, round, formal, and more.

Benefits of Fibreglass Pool Shells

Of course, there is a range of benefits to choosing a fibreglass pool shell.  Fibreglass pools are amazingly fast to install.  Once you’ve gotten council approval and the excavation has been done (if needed), you can be swimming in a matter of days!  This is in stark contrast to concrete swimming pools where you can be waiting months for them to be completed.  As well, fibreglass pools have an attractive smooth finish with no rough edges for swimmers to scrape themselves on. The smooth finish is also very low maintenance as it’s easy to clean and resistant to stains and algae.  You also don’t have to use a lot of chemicals in fibreglass pools as the inside surface is chemically inert – it won’t actually affect the chemistry of the water at all so you don’t need to keep adding chemicals to adjust it.  Fibreglass pools can also be finished in a range of colours so you can choose the one that most appeals to you.  Finally, you’ll love the fact that you are able to make your pool chlorinated or salt water, depending on what you prefer.
